This makes for a nice follow-up to the previously posted Large Hadron Collider story.

Sciencewatch is a global database that tracks scientific publications, papers and citations. Last month, Pakistan topped the list of countries with the biggest percentage increase in citations. Pakistan leads in the largest number of categories when compared to any other country. These categories include Computer Science, Engineering, Math and Materials Science.

Citations are not only a measure of the volume of work being done, but also its quality. You don’t get cited until you’ve published a piece of work of relevance to the wider community, or important to the development of your field of research. So we’re especially happy that it’s not just the volume of our scientists’ output, but also the excellence of the work that’s getting recognized. Bravo! The link and the complete table after the fold.

…yes with Nigeria, UAE and Zambia on the list as well; we’re sure standing with the giants!

Nash, this list represents largest percentage increases, so it stands to reason that countries with a baseline that was initially low would make it to the list. That said, intuitively you can determine that countries like Brazil, Pakistan, Singapore and Thailand started off with larger initial percentages, relatively, and if they are still on the list, that’s got to be a good thing.

But of course you can also take the cynical, sarcastic, pull-me-down approach you have decided to take. I am sure it is perfectly useful and productive and will stand you in excellent stead.

Mash’allah! Good to see Pakistan and so many other Muslim nations starting to produce more cited research. One thing the Muslim world desperately needs is to regain its lead in science, technology and knowledge acquisition/dissemination.

I also have to admire Iran– despite all the sanctions and international isolation, the the land of Abū Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna) is a leader in clinical medicine and biotechnology. I saw a report on Al Jazeera International last year where they were doing cutting-edge stem cell research.

No matter how big or small this achievement is, I whole heatedly congratulate all the great minds behind this, who are doing a wonderful job for our country. Keep up the good work guys and don’t pay any attention to the useless cynical comments by some who have nothing better to contribute.

Thank you for brining out this original research. It would be pedagogical to see the list. in absolute numbers also so that the cynics can be silenced

This Mashallah is a Real Big achievement!! But i doubt this will continue if this Government, unlike the previous one, doesnt gv enough Scholarship 2 students & funds 2 unis!! UET is deprived of its funds, the fees there hv increased, there r more or less no scholarships available at the moment 4 students applying abroad… all this was atleast available in the last government & apart from all flaws, this was indeed a VERY Good step!
Indeed, this & the coming governments hv 2 increase the Education Budget if u r willing 2 compete the Big Guns

MashaAllah, Great. i would say its really possible and what else proof is needed after the science watch link. I am myself an HEC scholar and am sure that i will be able to take at least 5/6 very active contacts with my professors when i will go back next year.

and with good students given to me, i m sure i can have 4/5 papers per year published, in A+ or A category journals or conferences…..though this zardari govt is really making probs. these days…but for me its luck, that i got early admission and now i am left with very less time. for others i can only pray that God save them from the wrath+greed of zardari.

I can tell that this is not the first time at all that you mention the topic. Why have you decided to touch it again?

  11. Suhail said, on April 16, 2009 at 3:42 pm

I shall like to mention a point. This increase or Progress what ever u say, is due to efforts of Dr Atta Ur Rehaman the former HEC chairman who did a lot to rise the standards in higher education. The present Govt has killed all the on going Scholarships Programs. Salutes to Dr Ata and Gen Musharraf for their efforts in the sector of Higher Education and Research.
PS : I have nothing to do with politics. Education Sector has flourished thats all.
