ossw.jpgLahore’s University of Engineering & Technology and its student science society are putting together a number of Open Source Workshops on the 22nd of March. If you’re in Lahore, and into Open Source technology, don’t miss out on the opportunity to attend. Registration is free and topics include everything from building scalable web based systems on an Open Source stack, to virtualization using Open Source Hypervisors such as Xen.

It’s great to see that as local Pakistani companies become more and more successful in outsourcing and exporting software, their engineers, who are exposed to cutting edge technologies, are stepping up and sharing the knowledge with others in the local tech community. One example that struck me was the workshop on Hypervisors; the individual conducting that session works at FiveRivers, a company based in Lahore that’s been developing Virtualization management software for it’s US customers. The software manages various different Hypervisors to implement Virtual Desktops. Now that engineers there have developed expertise with Hypervisors, that knowledge is spreading to others. This is just one example, if you go through the list of sessions, you’ll find many others!

The sharing of ideas and open exchange of knowledge was critical to the transformation of the Bay Area into “Silicon Valley”. We hope now that this process seems to be taking root in Pakistan, it drives the same level of success for our tech industry.. You can find the complete list of topics and a link to the registration site after the break.
