PTCL launches broadband entertainment portal in Pakistan
PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation Ltd.) has an uphill battle ahead of it as the number of its landline subscribers continues to shrink by the day. PTCL’s wireless services, Ufone and VPTCL, have been doing well, but the company still needs to offer value added services and widen its wireless subscriber base if it is to regain the leadership position it once enjoyed in Pakistan’s Telecom market.
After the Etisalat acquisition, we’ve heard at least some noises of the right kind that indicate a move in the value-added direction. One such noise is the launch of PTCL’s broadband entertainment portal. While mobile penetration has grown in leaps and bounds, and by all accounts, about 50% of the country’s population now possesses a cell connection, Broadband penetration remains low. Over the next few years, with services like wired broadband, Fiber to the home (FTTH), DSL, Cable, ISDN and WiMax, a broadband explosion is almost guaranteed. PTCL’s timing with their latest venture, therefore, is not bad… Read the Daily Times story after the break.
PTCL launches entertainment portal
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tele-communication Company Limited (PTCL) on Friday announced the launch of its Broadband Entertainment Portal and new packages for its DSL subscribers. Access to the portal will be absolutely free of cost exclusively for PTCL Broadband Pakistan customers.
Addressing a press conference Head of Commercial Department Dr Sadiq Al-Jadir said that the broadband portal offers to subscribers a variety of professional media contents including mainstream music (Urdu and English), movies, religious Naats and sports.
The PTCL is aware that customers need high speed and large size download capacity to fully experience the broadband portal – the movies and music, sports coverage and religious material. Thus, the Broadband Pakistan packages had been upgraded for the benefit of all existing and new subscribers, he maintained.
Broadband Pakistan offers DSL services with unmatched reliability, affordability and connectivity. Earlier, customers had the option of subscribing to either the volume based (256Kbps, 512Kbps) or unlimited access (1Mbps) packages, but now for the price of the 256Kbps package subscribers get the 512Kbps service with unlimited downloads.

we will have to consider so many factors before evaluating any value added service! We have seen Pakistan package and other before, which looked great at first glance…but they had their our cons….
Speaking frankly, a single service cant satisfy all, yet it can be a good addition to the company’s profile

Awesome for all pakistanis
Pakistanis are moving fast!
good effort by ptcl but still need lot of improvement as fo r customer satisfaction is concerned.
I have used it, basically portal consist of:
- Movies broadcasted illegally in choppy and minuscule format.
- Most of the pages are under construction.
- Content is of poor quality consisting of cheap jokes and bootleg music.
- Header is so huge it take half the page height.
- Too many clicks to see a particular content.
Reasons:
1. Expected from Pakistani company
2. Expected from Pakistani people
3. Expected from PTCL
4. Nepotism
Telenor Pakistan & Ufone has VAS too which shows old content, stale news, no replies, etc etc.
Their reasons:
1. Expected from Pakistani company
2. Expected from Pakistani people
Come on guys…we are talking about ADSL2+ in Australia with speeds of upto 24Mbps.
What good is a 256kbps broadband link ? In my opinion such upgrades should be bypassed for some some relatively better technology.
Majid, if you read the announcement carefully, they’re offering 512Kbps and 1Mbps at discounted rates. And you can get whatever amount of bandwidth you are willing to pay for.
The point about starting with a 512/1Mbps connection is simply to create an entry level package that’s affordable by more people. It’s not a technical constraint.
